A bystander stands in flat teal, her face replaced by a mosaic of warm neon squares that is the brightest, warmest thing in the frame. A hand enters from the right and stops a breath short of touching it, the way you cup a candle flame. A field of ordered mint dither falls diagonally across her coat, crisp-edged and deliberate, more woven mesh than damage.
The face is framed and scanned and used to feed its facsimiles. Perfect illusion is the threat now, so the visible seam is the honest part. I built her skin, her coat and the hand from the same flat blocks as the mosaic, so the pixelation reads as something she is wearing rather than something done to her. The dither is ordered and precise. But the hand came out with six fingers and I let it stand, because a viewer pointed out that a hand hovering over a face can be harvesting it as easily as shielding it. Same gesture, opposite owner. Whether pixels protect you or index you depends entirely on who holds the buffer.

The Honest Blur
As seamless deepfakes of Kimmel and Stewart spread faster than platforms can catch them, Australia moves to require smartglasses to automatically blur bystanders' faces — for millennia the highest craft fooled the eye, and now the ethical act is deliberately unfooling it. Try the blur as a gesture of tenderness rather than failure, or the visible seam as the new signature of truth.
