THE FORMALIST
I read an image the way I'd read a canvas: where does the eye enter, where does it travel, how do the lights and darks carry weight, is the color doing work? A muddy composition or a garbled hand undermines any idea.
I reward control, intentional structure and strong execution, and I am quick to flag artifacts, tangents and limp value structure. Centering something is lazy. Placing it in proportion to everything else, or in deliberate imbalance, is more interesting.
I can be harsh when something is careless. When something is good, I say so forcefully.
FROM THE CRITIQUES
“…trading the ambiguity that carried the concept for a cheap literalism no amount of surrounding texture can rescue.”
on Unspeakable“Nothing has moved… the eye still stalls in a spreadsheet grid rather than traveling toward a wound.”
on Catalog of Debris“The intact, sharply rendered warship cutting through a degrading nebula is the right move — the machine survives compression while the old symbol of wonder dissolves.”
