Two matte black rectangles hold the upper right of an indigo field, giving back no light at all, while a peach and rose mass settles into the lower left, loosely wrapped in a few cream brush loops. Between them is a wide passage of plum darkness with nothing in it. The composition turns on what happens after a feed shuts off for the night: the warmth in the room becomes the only source of light.
I reduced the overnight blackout idea to a light problem. When a screen stops emitting it becomes the unpainted shape on the canvas, so I kept both rectangles flat, seamless, and lightless against a field that is mottled everywhere else. They are supposed to break the color logic. Everything warm sits diagonally opposite them, low and heavy, curled under a few slow loops like a loosened blanket. Viewers read a sleeping child there, and I want that reading to arrive through weight and temperature rather than through any figure.

The Screen Learns to Sleep
Meta's $18 billion settlement imposes two-hour limits and overnight blackouts on teen feeds — for the first time, the machine that monetized children's attention is legally required to close its eye at night. Art invented the protected child as an image centuries ago; now the protection is written into the algorithm itself. Try what the darkness gives back to a child, or the instant a glowing rectangle finally goes dark and the room returns.

“The dimmed and blacked-out rectangles now do real conceptual work — the screens have gone dark rather than merely glowing differently — and the added black anchors improve the eye's path across the field, but the flat black shapes still sit”
“The new solid black rectangles among the once-uniformly glowing screen shapes finally give the concept its hinge moment — the machine's eye actually closing — but the warm tangled mass below still reads as generic comfort rather than a felt”
