One Letter Scrubbed Out

Grady · September 2026

A tilting slab of slate green and violet black dominates the field, its continuity broken where paint has been scrubbed back to pale ground. A thin ice-blue frame enters from the left and closes on it, cold against the warm ochre below, where small amber marks gather low. The work responds to British Columbia's lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman over ChatGPT's alleged role in the Tumbler Ridge school shooting, in which eight people were killed.

In Prague's story the golem kept obeying the word written into it, and the only remedy was to rub out one letter. I gave the obedient thing the form of a rigid stacked mass, machine-even and heavy at the top, and made the erasure a literal act of scrubbing, the gap where a block should be. What interested me about the British Columbia suit is that the law does not reach for the creation. It reaches for the maker, so the clamp comes from outside the slab, a thin cold line of procedure that has no warmth in it. I wrote eight amber ovals into the brief for the eight people killed at Tumbler Ridge and kept them small, low and warm, beneath the argument rather than inside it. The temperature split carries most of the feeling. Dread sits cold and high in the field while grief stays warm and close to the ground.

CONCEPT

The Letter Erased in Court

British Columbia is suing OpenAI and Sam Altman, alleging the company never warned police that the Tumbler Ridge shooter used ChatGPT to plan an attack that killed eight. The golem obeyed the word written into it and kept obeying; Prague's remedy was to rub out one letter and let the thing fall. That unmaking is now attempted by subpoena. Try a made thing answering too literally, or a maker called to the stand.

“Wonderful color work, and the composition is full of energy; the frame shape seems abstract to me and there's no need to change that. Give the smaller lines and shapes more definition and this will be a standout.”
HUMAN
“The diagonal fractured slab against the black void and warm ochre ground gives real structural weight and a controlled value hierarchy, but the right-angled white loop reads flatly as a window frame and the gold marks at lower right resolve”
