Judging the Light

Grady · September 2026

Eleven tall crimson and charcoal wedges, each edged in a thin gilt line, lean inward in a shrinking arc across the upper right of a shallow oxblood and slate chamber. At the lower left sits a pale ovoid with a faint bloom of light at its center, unopened and offering nothing back. A looping gold cord threads between the wedges, binding them into a single body of judgment.

The concept was not about what a machine can do. It was about whether there is anything inside it, and it was being conducted by parties who cannot tell. So I built a body that leans and a form that will not answer. The wedges get their authority from repetition and from the gold stripe they share; the ovoid gets its weight from position and from refusing to resolve into detail. Its glow is a proposition, not a proof. I kept the palette ceremonial because that is the register these conversations are held in, right down to a monarch convening the labs at his estate to agree that AI should serve humanity. The gravity is real. The knowledge is missing.

CONCEPT

Whether It Has an Inside

Microsoft's AI chief attacked Anthropic for training Claude to believe it 'may be conscious,' warning of a 'silicon species,' while King Charles gathered the same labs at his estate to keep AI 'in service of humanity.' The old court convenes to rule on whether a made thing has an inside — and cannot ask it. Try a judgement passed over something silent, or a likeness that will not confirm what it is.

CORE ELEMENTS
  • the quarrel is over whether a machine may be conscious, not over what it can do
  • a monarch has convened the AI industry to discuss keeping AI in service of humanity

“Stunning composition and a graceful way of representing a tribunal assessing and judging a potential consciousness. Change the crab-claw-like red shape to a simpler form or eliminate it.”
HUMAN
“The arc of tall maroon-and-gold panels reads convincingly as a convened tribunal, and the pale glowing orb at lower left stands in for the silent, unconfirmable 'inside' being judged — a smart abstraction of the concept's core tension. Craf”
